Stephanie Gandy

D.O.B: 10/05/82

Height:
5′10″

Weight:

Position:
Forward

Notes:

Although the 5’10” forward did not earn a call-up to the GB senior women’s squad until the summer of 2010, Gandy has long been known as one of the country’s leading players, through her association with the Sheffield Hatters team.

A dual-national American-Brit, Gandy attended high school in Detroit and earned a scholarship to the University of Michigan where she enjoyed a productive four-year career. In her senior season, 2004-05, Gandy averaged 11.6 points and 3.6 rebounds in 31 games and embarked upon her professional career in Holland with top division club Lieshout.

At the start of the 2005-06 campaign, Gandy began her connection with British basketball, signing with the Hatters for the first of four consecutive seasons in which she won practically every honour in the domestic game. A three-time EBL champion, Gandy was also the MVP of the Hatters’ 2009 National Cup Final win and of their 2008 Play-off Finals loss.

Steph played for the Hatters from 2005-2009. She then went to play in Australia and achieved MVP of the season. She was injured during the playoffs in Australia and therefore was unable to go and play in Germany in September 2009 as originally planned.

After much treatment Steph was signed to Biella in Italy in October 2009. She played out the season in Biella, averaging 45 points per game including several 50 point games earning her the title of ‘Iron Gandy’ . Biella won the championship and Steph was given MVP of the league. Steph returned to the UK in June 2010 to start training with Team GB. (She was not eligible to play for GB before as she was only naturalised towards the end of Summer 2009)

The info above is not correct.
The first part of Stephs early days is right, but you missed out he following -Gandy won defensive player of the year at Michigan, was Captain of the team her senior year and was selected as a starter on the Big Ten All Star Team two years in a row. She was also voted onto the all Star team for the state of Michigan and was ranked in the Top 30 players in the entire State of Michigan.

After finishing her 4th year with the Hatters and completely dominating the English league (Remembering Steph was playing totally out of position as a 4 and 5 position in England and still dominating – She actually plays the 3 spot) Steph went to play Summer league in Australia (summer 2009) where she was awarded best player in the league. However, in the opening game of the playoffs in Australia steph was fouled hard by an opposing player and tore her meniscus in her knee. She had already signed with Germany at this point and the only reason it didn’t work out was because medically steph was not fit to compete due to injury. In October 2009 after top US AND UK doctors and physios helped Steph she recovered well and was signed to play for Biella in Italy. She played her 2009/2010 season in Italy, averaging 50 points per game, earning player of the league and winning the championship. She is now in the best shape of her career since college and it is absolutely ridiculous she isn’t playing for team GB right now – she is by far the best player on the squad list. I know many people in the basketball world are questionning why she isn’t there.
Several teams are currently interested in signing Gandy including div one teams from Spain and France. She is currently deciding who to sign with.

Think you need to update your info with the real facts, as the above is not accurate.

Yeh , Steph played her last season season in Italy after getting injured in Auz last summer. They definitely won as her team gained promotion and coz of this she didn’t end up coming back from Italy until real late in May I think!
I saw Steph a couple of weeks ago and she looks in great shape, probably the best since she has been in the UK and she was a class player then so I definitely wouldn’t want to play against her now lol!

It’s only my opinion but I think SG should be a starter for GB – Kim B, Page, Gandy, Collins and Leedham would have been the best combination.

Back up point defintely Hutchinson and Wade-Frey.

Chantelle would be a good back up at the 3 and probably Sarah and Z as the back up posts. Saying that after the way Gandy used to play the 4 and 5 in the UK league she wouln’t be a bad choice here either!

Shame Mason was cut haven’t seen her in a while but always thought she was a stong player.
We were all shocked when Gandy and even Mason were cut from team GB. Apparently its because of some rule about naturalisation, and a point guard called stafford has been brought in. I know she played well in the English league last year but from what I’ve been told shes not worth dismissing Steph from the team. She scores alot of points but defense is questionable. Surely its better to do both? And Megan H is still on the sqad list and I’m sure she is naturalised and again Steph is a far stronger player than Megan.
It’s all very weird!

I say mix UWIC (well Steph Collins), and Hatters starting line up from 2007/2008 with the addition of Butler and Page that team would beat the current GB squad –

Naylor Sisters
SG
Mason,
Taylor
Collins
Hutchinson
Crowley
Butler
Page

Now thats a good GB team!

Anyway Good Luck GB.

Hang on why not have both Stafford and Gandy on the squad, then you have all spots covered. Gandy can play 3,4,5 and Stafford can play 1,2? Just interchange them depending on the team playing! Seems the obvious thing to do!

Gandy is by far the most talented all round player on the GB squad! Her leadership on court is brilliant. She was one of the finest leaders at michigan and it’s good to see she is on the GB team. They need Gandy on the floor!
