Sarah McKay
D.O.B:05/12/85
Height: 6′7″
Weight:
Position: Centre
Notes:
A 6’7” centre, McKay was born in Canada but represents GB thanks to her father Mike, a former professional basketball player and England international.
After an outstanding high school career in British Columbia, McKay became the tallest player in the history of the prestigious Indiana University programme when she started playing for the college in 2003. Over the next four seasons, her development was sufficient to earn her an invitation to training camp with the Seattle Storm in the WNBA and, although she was a late cut from the opening night roster, McKay seemed destined for a strong professional career.
So it proved, when McKay moved to Spain and signed for Cadi la Seu D’urgell for the 2007-08 season. While there, GB officials recruited Australian-born Megan Moody from the same club team and were alerted to McKay’s GB roots.
That led, the following summer, to McKay making her national team debut in the A Division of Eurobasket, a tough campaign which saw the team forced to play in the relegation play-off tournament in early 2009. McKay was also a key member of the GB team in that competition although her effectiveness was limited by injury.
By that point, McKay was with another Spanish club, Navarra, in the second division and, although the injury problems delayed her start to the domestic 2009-10 season, by November she was back in the top division, the LFB, with Cadi la Seu D’urgell.
Damian Jennings says: “At 6’7”, she is the person we’ve all been waiting for and, while we have not seen the best of her yet because of injuries, Sarah is a player of incredible potential. She has really nice qualities around the basket and a fully-fit Sarah will give us a real threat and inside presence we have not had before. She’s also a very mobile 6’7” so it is difficult to say how high her potential really is, as long as she remains healthy.”
