Position:Guard
Notes:
A 5’10” guard from Blackpool, Lancashire, Clayden first burst into prominence at Auburn University in the US where she enjoyed two solid seasons, with her three-point shooting making her a particularly valuable member of the team.
Clayden moved to Auburn after two seasons at Panola Junior College in Texas where she helped the team to win a regional championship, earning an All-Conference honorable mention and an Academic All-Conference team selection along the way.
After graduation, Clayden returned to north-west England and embarked upon her professional career with EBL side Manchester Mystics, her form earning her a contract, for the 2008-09 season, in Spain with second division side Arxil Comervia for whom she averaged 9.2 points a game in 30 appearances.
An England international throughout her youth, at under-16, under-18 and under-21 levels, her college commitments meant that she was unavailable to the GB team in its inaugural seasons of 2006 and 2007. But, by the summer of 2008, Clayden had been named to the GB roster and made her so far only appearance for the team in an A Division group game against Lithuania.
Damian Jennings says: “An athletic, experienced player whose strongest asset is probably her three-point shooting. Jo is very good finishing on the end of a fastbreak and is an intelligent player who turns her athleticism into a big advantage. At the defensive end she can probably make the most improvements but she definitely as the athleticism to succeed in this growth area.”
